DAYO UK dives Cromhall Diving Centre - Bristol England

DAYO UK - Brit detachment found some new members and a new inland dive site so decided to go try it out.

    http://www.cromhall.com/community/cr...ing_centre.php

Cromhall Quarry near Bristol in the South West of England has 9.5 acres of water and is only 1.5 miles from J14 of the M5.
The slightly undulating rock bottom gives an ideal training depth of 17 metres. It slopes upwards to the former haul road entry, giving a shallow beach area allowing easy access and egress for entry-level dive trainees and rescue training.

At the north end of the quarry is a pontoon floating in 15 metres of water that has been specifically designed for ease of use by divers.

The former limestone quarry has filled naturally, with underwater visibility during April 2011 of up to 5-6 metres, which is expected to rise to 8-10 metres during the Summer.

Dusty and Jim took along Dustys Girlfriend Becky and son Jack for a discover Scuba Dive experience and after Dusty and Jim went for a little swim around to see what was on offer. Other qualified new members of the Brit team, Andy Glennon and his daughter Vicky came along to try UK diving after having recently completed their OW courses in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

The DSD went well and both Jack and Becky are convinced they now want to take the PADI OW course, we will sort that out as soon as we can! The site itself isnt bad at all and with a water temperature of 18C and vis of up to 10 metres it made for a very enjoyable dive. We managed to take in some of the underwater attractions but due to the time available we have yet more exploring to do and will do a follow up trip as part of the ow course, more detail to follow on that once we sort times and dates out.

Overall not a bad day at all and another nice dive site to add to our list of places to dive, inland, in UK.

We went back to Cromhall today, just 3 of us this time and had a proper look around. Its not a bad dive at all, 16c so not too cold either, for UK that is. Still in wetsuits too, i must do that dry suit instructors course and get a drysuit, anyone can rough it and it seems we do every time. There was quite a lot to see but the main aim was to get andy and Vicky better used to the rigours of UK diving, they seem to be getting the hang of it so it will soon be time to take them off to the south Coast to some some wrecks, that will teach them to be so keen! All in all a good day so whenever you lot want to come over here there are plenty of inland and coastal sites i can take you to, once you have all hired dry suits of course!

    Denise, the web site states

"The site is unique - it is home to EU-protected Great Crested Newts (click here to find out more about the newts), and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest containing, among other fossils, the Cromhall dinosaur." I have seen neither newts or dinosaurs to be fair! There is also, reportedly, a very large Koi carp that was donated by someone, i havent seen that either. there are small fish in and around the grassy beds but i couldnt tell you what they are. apparently the quarry was deliberately flodoed because of the dinosaur find as too many people went fossil hunting there and there was a danger from the sides of the quarry collapsing. Next time we go we are going to pick some very specific areas and have a good look around, more news to follow once we do that. Not sure when that will be as its getting a little cold here now, even for us roughy toughy Brit soldier types. i really must get myself on a dry suit course!

We were at about 7 metres (21 ft). The quarry is only 12 m (36ft) max. There were LOADS of them, all over the place!

Denise we went back again today specifically to look for the newts and there are literally thousands of them, didnt get any pics to day though but we will be going back so will try to get some pics of them in the grass there. At first it looked like someone had dropped about a thousand boxes of confetti into the grass but it was the really young newts that are white, they get darker in colour as they get older but there were loads and loads of them.

Just wondering, when are you going to be back in Florida to do some diving. I had a couple of questions for you.
