Animated Dive Flag Dayo Scuba's Newsletter for September 2011

    September 2011

School is back in session, but diving couldn't be better. It's still hot outside, but between the storms, the diving has been exceptional this past month. We've taken some of the best photos ever, and had a month of great adventures with classes and dive trips. We have the busiest schedule ever for the upcoming months, so it doesn't seem things are slowing down... I'm not complaining!

Congratulations to our divemaster and instructor interns, Nathan, Beau, and Irish Bob. They are all enthusiastic and likely to finish this month.

Where to dive in the Orlando area?

Years ago we put together a simple web page to let visitors and customers know where the good dive sites are within driving range from Orlando and Central Florida. You can find that information at www.scubaorlando.com We will be updating this page, a lot, this month. Give us your feedback, ideas, corrections, additions if you please. Email tj@dayo.com for this.

Another great source for dive site information is on our web site, under forums, then find Dive Site Plans down the list. Link

    SHOP DEALS

We are now proud dealers for the GoPro camera. It is capable of taking great stills and HD video. Gopro even has a configuration that can make HD videos in 3D. Come by and check them out. We've got them in all configurations! Drop by and we'll make a deal!

Tim Vann, our resident expert with the camera, has been using them quite a while. I found the following two pictures of him with it attached to his helmet:

More information from the GoPro website:

GoPro’s HD HERO is the world’s highest performance wearable 1080p HD video and still photo camera. Professional quality 1080p / 960p / 720p HD resolutions record at 30 and 60 frames per second (60 fps in 720p). Record up to 2.5 hours on a single charge and up to 9 hours total on a 32GB SD card (not included).

The camera can also shoot automatic 5 megapixel photos at 2/5/10/30 and 60 second intervals during your activity, hands free. Press the shutter button once at the start of your activity and record up to 2.5 hours of poster-print quality photos of you and your friends, living it up.

Included is one mount for attaching the camera to a helmet or other curved surface as well as the quick-release HD housing which protects the camera.

The HD HERO is compatible with all other GoPro HERO camera mounting accessories, so it’s very easy to expand the functionality of your camera to suction cup to vehicles, clamp to bike handlebars and seat posts, mount to surfboards, and even be worn on the wrist or chest.

Waterproof to 180’ / 60m and protected from rocks and other hazards thanks to its removable polycarbonate housing. Replacement housings and lens kits are available, making repairs or refurbishing your HD HERO camera affordable and convenient. It’s a GoPro…go for it.™

    The Air we breath

We at Dayo Scuba take great pride in providing the cleanest air possible. Our triple filter system almost makes it impossible to deliver 'bad air'. We do, like all good dive shops should do, periodic testing. Below is our latest results.

The air and oxygen we fill travels through a basic filter, then through the blending device we built to continuously fill nitrox, then on through the basic intake filter on the compressor. After leaving the compressor, the gas travels through three high performance and special air filters before arriving at your scuba cylinder or our banks. Its very clean and I believe we are the most affordable supplier in town.. and to make filling tanks easier... you can even drive up (out back) to the fill station... the only one in Central Florida.

Dayo Scuba offers Emergency Response Diving Instruction (ERDI) which is public safety training that simulates actual situations to give the ERDI students a clear understanding of how emergencies are handled in the real world.

    Creature Feature - - - Squid

Squids are close cousins of the octopus, with large heads and beaks, eight suckered arms and two longer feeding tentacles.

Photo taken by Denise on a night dive on 4 Sept 2011

The 300 + species range throughout the world's oceans, ranging in size from a couple of inches, to Architeuthis, the Giant Squid, more than 40 feet long!

All squid are carnivorous, feeding on a wide range of fish, crabs, shrimp and other squid. They catch their prey with their tentacles, and hold tightly to it while they tear it up into small pieces with their beaks.

A squid's skin is covered with chromatophores, special cells that allow the squid to change color to blend into its surroundings to camouflage itself from predators. These color changes are also used for communication and mood change!

Another interesting defense tactic is when a squid is in danger, they can squirt a cloud of dark ink in order to confuse their attacker and allow the squid to escape.

The Caribbean Reef Squid, Sepioteuthis sepioidea, West Palm Beach
Photos above & below by Robert Palmer

The Caribbean Reef Squid is found throughout the tropical waters along Caribbean coastlines and off the Bahamas and Florida. In fact, the Caribbean Reef Squid is the only squid species commonly sighted by divers over inshore reefs off Florida.

They are usually found in small schools in shallow water associated with reefs, anywhere from teh surface to a depth of 300 feet!

This species, like most other species of squid, has a voracious appetite and can eat between 30-60% of its body weight daily!
