Also, we are doing another Tortugas trip this October (see our calendar for details), and want to make a trip to Mexico (Baja or Yucatan). If interested please contact use.

SHOP DEALS

We still have a few Pinnacle Black Ice Dry Suits from our special purchase. They are only $700 and we have sizes XL and 4XL only left.

We are also now stocking a full like of Lavacore suits. These can be used as a wetsuit, drysuit undergarment or as a skin. Lavacore changes the status quo and adds some “heat” to the product category – literally. Lavacore is designed to be lightweight like a traditional dive skin, but the soft, fleece lining inside provides an extra level of comfort. In essence, it works like a wetsuit to let water in, but unlike a skin, the water is retained adding warmth and comfort. For those wearing a Lavacore suit, it was not only warm, but comfortable without all the “bulk” and added buoyancy of a traditional wetsuit.

Continuing Education

This Month: Nitrox Diver

Nitrox is our most popular specialty diver course, and its easy to see why. Over the last two decades Nitrox has become one of the most important tools used in scuba diving. It has many benefits and advantages over air, and has revolutionized the way we dive today.

Air is primarily a mix of nitrogen and oxygen, in a ratio of 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen. This is an excellent mix for the surface, obviously as we have been using it for thousands of years! However for scuba diving, adjusting this ratio (resulting in a breathing mix we call Nitrox) opens many windows of opportunity.

Nitrox is enriched air, any mix that has more than 21% oxygen in it (and proportionately less nitrogen). If we have less nitrogen in our tanks, we breathe and accumulate less of it during our dives, so therefore we can stay down longer, have shorter surface intervals, and are less prone to issues that too much nitrogen causes. Like everything, there is a drawback to “too much of a good thing”, there are certain considerations to be taken into account when using Nitrox. This course trains divers to safely and effectively use Nitrox mixes from 22-40% on dives.

Call us or check out our Calendar for dates of upcoming courses.

Dayo Scuba offers Emergency Response Diving Instruction (ERDI) which is public safety training that simulates actual situations to give the ERDI students a clear understanding of how emergencies are handled in the real world.

Cavern and Overhead Diving!

The cavern zone is the part of a cave from which daylight is still visible. It is probably the most beautiful part of the cave, and has some incredible scenery. It is essential that curious divers learn the proper techniques to safely explore this new environment without endangering themselves or damaging this fragile environment.

Cavern diving is NOT for everyone, but does help to prepare and train divers that want to safely venture into the cavern zone of caves and overhead environments like wrecks. It is a very hands-on, fun course, where you will learn to multi-task like never before!

The cavern course develops the minimum skills and knowledge for safe cavern diving. Topics include cavern diving planning, good cavern diving techniques (line and light use), body positioning (trim), cavern propulsion techniques, emergency procedures, problem solving, and other specialized needs of cavern diving (silting, entanglement, disorientation, and equipment modifications). Throughout your cavern course you will learn how to streamline your equipment, and use new gear such as using a reel, a backup spool, and a long hose on your primary regulator. You will also learn how to fine tune your buoyancy.

Cavern diving is in NO way intended to provide instruction for cave diving.

Creature Feature - - - Trumpetfish

There are 3 species of the unmistakable trumpetfish worldwide, but only one, Aulostomus maculatus, lives in Florida.

Trumpetfish, is an unusually elongated fish, with a matching tubular snout. They can reach 3 feet in length, with their snout and head accounting for a third of their body length!

Trumpetfish use two clever camouflage tricks to capture prey and avoid their own predators. They are normally a reddish-brown color, but can change their appearance by lighting or darkening their skin color!! They can be a range of colors from yellow, green, purple to blue.

Trumpetfish can also be observed swimming in an upright position (snout down) or lying completely motionless to camouflage themselves amongst vertical coral, sea fans and sponges on the reef. They are masters of camouflage and can even swim for extended periods in perfect alignment with other herbivorous fish, waiting for the perfect moment to strike at their unsuspecting prey.

They catch smaller fish and shrimp by using their elongated snout. They can expand their snouts diameter, causing a vacuum which allows the trumpetfish to suction up their unsuspecting prey!

The trumpetfish breeding is no less interesting than their feeding behavior. Using their color changing abilities, females acquire a mate. She then transfers her eggs to the male who takes care of them until they hatch.....Like the seahorse, the males give birth to the baby trumpetfish.
