    SDI Sidemount Diver Specialty Course

    The SDI Sidemount Diver Specialty program teaches certified divers how to safely utilize side mounted primary cylinders as an alternative to the traditional back mounted configuration.

    Learn to dive sidemount from one of the pioneers! Tom Johnson/ tj (shown above) was using sidemount long before it was even known outside of a select few cave divers. He helped make it popular by promoting it for years in caves and oceans.

    What it is:

    The SDI Sidemount Diver Specialty program teaches students how to dive with a sidemount configuration without direct supervision, within the limits of their previous training (within depth and NDL limits).

    This includes: educational materials, your dive training, certification card, and photos (above and below water).

    Other costs:

    The course fee includes everything except food, lodging, gear hire, dive site fees & transportation.

    Gear you need to provide:

    Each student will need to provide:

    * Basic gear (mask, fins, snorkel, booties and exposure suit)

    * Dive computer and additional depth and timing device

    * Dual cylinders, with appropriate volume for planned dives, and SAC rate.

    * Two independent first and second stages, each with an SPG

    * Buoyancy compensator with power inflator appropriate for sidemount configuration.

    What the course entails:

    The SDI Sidemount Diver Specialty program of academics, a detailed classroom session emphasizing equipment and planning, and two dives. Each dive must follow the dive plan discussed before the dive or the student must do an additional certification dive.

    Age requirements:

    You must be at least 18 years old to receive the SDI Sidemount Diver Specialty certification (15 with parental consent); there is no maximum age.

    Minimum # of students per class:


    This class can be done when we are teaching virtually any other class.

    How many people are in each class?

    On average 1-3.

    We train all the time, and have multiple instructors on staff, many full time, so we do weekday and weekend classes.

    How long does the course take?

    The academics and gear preparation take a half day, another wet day for diving (2 dives).

    Where we do our SDI Sidemount Diver Specialty course:

    We train in the local springs (Alexander Springs, Devil's Den, Deleon Springs and Blue Springs), during the Wintertime, and the local lakes during the Summertime.

    Where we go usually depends on what other classes we are running.

    Prerequisites for Course:

    * You will need to provide the gear mentioned above.

    * Before participating in the SDI Sidemount Diver Specialty program, you will be required to fill out a standard liability release form and a medical statement. If you answer YES to anything, a medical form will be required to be signed off by a physician.

    * Minimum of Open Water Diver rating

    * Be a minimum age of 18 (15 with parental consent)

    * is highly recommended for all diving activities.

    What you can do afterwards:

    * Dive, dive, dive!!!

    * Dive in sidemount configuration within the limits of your previous training.

    * Continue your diver training with a specialty dives and more courses.

    * You can comfortably carry your cylinders down to the water one at a time, with minimal risk to your back.

    * You can look up and very clearly see what is in front of you- without banging your head on a manifold.
