Snappers are a family of 100 or so perch like fish, most are marine, but some venture into estuaries and freshwater rivers in the hunt for food. Snappers are found in the all tropical and subtropical oceans, at depths of up to 1000 feet. They are nocturnal predators that feed on crabs, lobster and small fish.

They can grow to about three feet in length, and are a very popular game fish. Their common name comes from the behavior of snapping their jaws when hooked.

Yellowtail Snappers usually swim alone in small groups. Despite their small size, they are unafraid of divers, and often approach them curiously.
